The halls of William Thomas Middle School were filled with eager anticipation and excitement on August 21st, as students and teachers returned for the start of the 2023-2024 school year. With the new academic year comes a host of innovative changes aimed at enhancing student learning and engagement.

Teachers were bubbling with enthusiasm as they welcomed students back to their classrooms. The air was electric with the promise of new experiences and opportunities. Eighth-grade science teacher Ms. Clark shared, "I can't wait to see what this year brings. The students' energy is contagious, and I'm excited to dive into the new year."

One of the key changes this school year is the introduction of W.I.N. Time - an acronym for Work, Intervention, and Nourishment. This novel approach allows students to choose where they want to start their school day, empowering them to take ownership of their learning. Each core subject has a designated day for pulling in students who need extra help or have missing assignments. For students who are up-to-date with their work, a range of activities awaits, from trivia and kickball to meditation and Uno to karaoke and chess. This flexible schedule not only caters to academic needs but also promotes holistic development.

Another initiative sparking enthusiasm among students and staff is DEAR, which stands for Drop Everything and Read. Regardless of grade level or subject, all students and teachers set aside 10 minutes every day after lunch to immerse themselves in reading. This shared activity not only promotes a love for reading but also creates a sense of unity as the entire school community engages in this quiet yet impactful pursuit.

In addition to these changes, parents and guardians are advised to take note of the drop-off zones. Drop-off areas are located on Pocatello Avenue and Bannock Avenue. To ensure the safety of students and staff, the parking lot and bus lane are not to be used for drop-off. New signs have been posted to guide traffic accordingly, and it's important to adhere to these guidelines. The school administration has made it clear that tickets will be issued to violators who disregard these regulations.

Technological advancements are also making waves at William Thomas Middle School this year. A new Chromebook checkout system has been implemented, streamlining the process of accessing technology for learning. Chromebooks will now be checked in and out through students' homeroom teachers on a daily basis, ensuring equitable access and fostering responsible technology usage.

As the school year kicks off, fall sports have also taken center stage. Football, volleyball, and cross country teams have already begun their rigorous schedules, igniting school spirit and a sense of camaraderie among athletes and supporters alike. Exciting games and meets are anticipated throughout the season, and the school is buzzing with anticipation.

"Dear Tired Teacher, When the expectations begin to feel impossible, remember that because of you, someone smiled, learned something new, became more confident, and felt loved. Don't give up- Heath Browder, Carpenter." This is the mantra adopted by 7th grade ELA teacher and Team Leader Kim West, reflecting the unwavering dedication of the school's educators.

"Our school was already great, but these new changes are going to make it awesome!" Principal Tyler Shafer exclaimed. This sentiment reflects the collective excitement and optimism shared by the entire school community about the transformative changes in place.

With W.I.N. Time, DEAR, the new Chromebook checkout system, and a bustling fall sports season, William Thomas Middle School is off to an energetic start for the 2023-2024 school year. The dedication of both students and teachers to these new initiatives promises a year filled with growth, learning, and memorable experiences.
