Presenter holding a barn owl

The fifth grade at J.R. Simplot Elementary held their third annual “Owl Day” on Thursday, Oct. 14. In science, the fifth graders
are focusing on a “Web of Life” unit. They have been learning about predators and prey (food chains/ webs) and the importance
of biological control.
This is the third year
working with the Power County Extension Educa- tor, Terrell Sorensen, and neighboring county educa- tors, on learning about a specific food chain that is important to our area and our local farmers with voles and barn owls. They bring in other organisms that may be seen as pests and discuss the importance of those or- ganisms to the ecosystems in which they live. The stu- dents were able to see and learn about a barn owl, hold insects, gerbils and animals they may never have had the opportunity to hold if it weren’t for the partner- ship with the University of Idaho Extension.
